Methodology

How We Teach Fixed Income

Every Jade Anchor programme follows the same structural logic: start with the thing itself — what a bond actually is, what a yield actually represents — before moving to mechanics, and then to application. This sequence is deliberate. It mirrors how durable understanding develops in adult learners, rather than how information is typically presented in financial textbooks.

Worked examples are central to every session. Concepts are illustrated through real or realistic scenarios rather than abstract formulae. Where mathematics is unavoidable, it is presented step by step, with plain-language explanation of what each figure means and why it matters.

Reading materials are distributed ahead of each session. Participants are expected to arrive having reviewed them — not necessarily having understood everything, but having engaged enough to bring specific questions. This structure changes the quality of sessions considerably.

Concepts First

Each new topic begins with a plain-English definition before any mechanics are introduced.

Worked Through Examples

Numerical examples are completed together in session, with time for questions at each step.

Applied to Context

Every concept is connected to the Hong Kong market environment and to real portfolio situations.

Consolidated in Writing

Intermediate and advanced participants produce written outputs they keep and can refer to after the course.

Understanding Bonds course
Course 1 · Introductory · 4 Weeks

Understanding Bonds

A four-week introductory course for adults aged 40 and above who want to understand what a bond is, what it isn't, and why fixed income matters in a long-term portfolio. The course uses worked examples rather than equations.

What This Course Covers

  • What a bond is and how it differs from equities
  • Coupon structure: fixed, floating, and zero-coupon
  • Yield to maturity explained through worked calculations
  • Credit quality and what ratings indicate

Fixed Income Portfolio Construction

A six-week programme that moves from understanding individual bonds to thinking about a fixed income allocation within a broader portfolio. Modules cover laddering, diversification across issuer and region, the role of bond funds and ETFs for smaller portfolios, and the trade-offs between direct holdings and pooled vehicles. Participants complete a written allocation exercise relevant to their own life stage.

What This Course Covers

  • From individual bonds to a portfolio perspective
  • Laddering strategies and their trade-offs
  • Diversification across issuer type, region, and currency
  • Bond funds and ETFs: how they work and when to consider them
  • Direct holdings vs pooled vehicles: a structured comparison
  • Written allocation exercise (completed and kept by participant)

Prerequisite: Participants should be comfortable with the concepts covered in Understanding Bonds, either through that course or equivalent prior knowledge. Contact us to discuss if unsure.

Course 3 · Advanced · 10 Weeks

Yield, Duration, and Risk in Depth

A ten-week programme for learners who want a deeper grounding in how bond prices move and why. The course covers the mechanics of duration and convexity in accessible language, the relationship between interest rates and bond prices across cycles, credit spread behaviour, and how fixed income has historically behaved during major market events. Each participant builds an annotated reference document they can return to over time.

What This Course Covers

  • Duration mechanics: modified duration and price sensitivity
  • Convexity explained without calculus
  • Interest rate cycles and bond price behaviour across them
  • Credit spreads: what drives them and what they signal
  • Historical fixed income behaviour during major market events
  • Building and keeping an annotated personal reference document

Prerequisite: Solid familiarity with the concepts in both preceding courses is expected. Participants who are unsure whether they are ready for this programme are encouraged to contact us.
